Meet The Veteran Behind Armor Flagpoles

My name is Rodney. Armor Flagpoles grew out of a life built around service, family, travel, and a love of the American flag.

I have been selling flags around Florida, especially the Florida Panhandle, since 2021. I have sold flags at fairs, tractor shows, veteran parades, car shows, motorcycle rallies, and community events. I have worked at the Georgia State Fair and the Pensacola Fair. I have met people from all over the country while traveling through Florida.

Every event has its own personality. Some people stop because they want a flag for their home. Some are looking for a gift for a veteran or family member. Others stop to tell a story about a unit, a parent, a grandparent, or someone they lost.

I have also lived through more than a few hurricanes and learned to respect what coastal weather can do. The Florida Panhandle is beautiful, but the weather can change quickly. That experience matters when you are helping someone choose equipment that will live outside and be used in the real world.

I met Dorothy while selling flags in Navarre, Florida. Today, we live the RV lifestyle, travel around the country, and spend much of our time along the Emerald Coast. Our Australian Shepherd, Hero, was born in Live Oak and has traveled plenty of miles with us.

Duty - Honor - Country

My military experience continues to shape how I think about equipment, responsibility, and service. During my career, I served as a Tank Commander and Platoon Sergeant across five armor unit assignments.

I worked on tanker platforms including the Sheridan, M60 series, and M1. I also trained many National Guard units in different parts of the country.

Those assignments are more than a list on a page. They are part of the people, equipment, lessons, and responsibilities that shaped my life. Heavy equipment has to be maintained, respected, and ready for difficult conditions. People depend on the people who maintain it.

That experience stayed with me. When we built Armor Flagpoles, we wanted to offer equipment that reflected those same values: dependable construction, practical use, and a clear warranty customers can understand.

Why We Built Armor Flagpoles

Our company supports military members, veterans, first responders, seniors, and fellow patriots who want to display the flag with pride.

We are Christians, and we try to run this business with honesty, respect, gratitude, and a spirit of service. We want to be friendly and helpful people, not pushy salespeople. Our goal is to listen, answer questions, and help each customer choose equipment that fits the way they will actually use it.

We are not trying to sell a flagpole as a decoration that gets forgotten in the corner. For many families, the flag represents service, sacrifice, faith, freedom, and memories of people they love.

That is why we pay attention to the details that matter: the pole, the mounting setup, the flags, the lighting, the weather, and how a customer will actually use the equipment. A homeowner, an RV traveler, a tailgater, and a veteran event organizer may all need different answers.

The People We Meet Through Flags

Selling flags has introduced us to people with all kinds of backgrounds. We have met veterans who served in different eras, families honoring loved ones, first responders, seniors, travelers, and people who simply want to show respect for the country.

Older veterans and seniors often have the best stories. A flag can bring back memories of a unit, a ship, a base, a family member, or a time in life that should not be forgotten. Sometimes a short conversation turns into a story that lasts an hour.

Those conversations are one of the reasons we enjoy this business. The flag creates an opening, but the people are what make the work meaningful.

Life Along The Florida Panhandle

We spend much of the year along the Florida Panhandle, where the beaches have sugar-white sand and the water, wildlife, fishing, and changing weather are part of everyday life.

We enjoy meeting the people who live here, the tourists who come to explore the coast, and the RV travelers who stop for a few days or stay for a season. We have spent time around Henderson Beach State Park, Crystal Beach, Norriego Point, Crab Island, Destin Harbor, Clement Taylor Park, and other waterfront areas.

Fishing, Food, And Local Places

One of our favorite parts of RV life is waking up early, finding a good place to fish, and seeing what the day brings. Okaloosa Island Pier, the harbor, and the nearby waterfront give us plenty of reasons to get outside.

After fishing or watching the boats, we may stop at McGuire’s Irish Pub, Brotula’s Seafood House, or The Back Deck. We also appreciate the local veteran community, including American Legion Post 296, and the small businesses that make the Panhandle feel like home.

Sometimes the plan is fishing. Other times we just like checking out or visiting a local restaurant, watching boats come in, or sitting around the campsite with a cup of coffee. The best days are often the ordinary ones spent with family, friends, and people we meet along the way.

Our RV Life And The Armor Flagpole

When we arrive at an RV park, getting settled is only part of the routine. We want to know the site, the weather, the available utilities, and how much room we have for the equipment we plan to use.

We also like putting our colors up. A flagpole at the campsite helps us find our rig, gives the site a sense of home, and starts conversations with other veterans, families, tourists, and patriots.

Check it out, even the neighbors got their flag flying. 

Important RV Setup Note: If you are using a fifth-wheel camper or travel trailer, attach the flagpole to the hitch or receiver as directed.

Do not connect the flagpole to the camper’s ladder or ladder rack.

Strong winds can put damaging force on a ladder rack and may damage the ladder or tear up the camper. Take the flag down in severe weather and follow the kit’s setup instructions.

There is something special about seeing the flag moving in the breeze at a campsite. It gives the site a sense of place. It also makes it easier to find your rig when several campers look alike.

For us, putting up the flag is part of settling in. Before long, someone may stop by to ask about the setup, share a travel story, or talk about a relative who served.

How Travel Helps Us Help Customers

Because we travel and use equipment in real places, we understand that one setup does not fit everybody. A homeowner may need a different solution than an RV traveler, a tailgater, or someone displaying a flag at an event.

Meet The Crew

Dorothy is my lady traveling partner. She spent 33 years working for the federal government and brings the same steady, practical approach to our life and business.

Semi-retired with my lady Dorothy and our Australian Shepherd Hero, the Frisbee enthusiast.

Plenty to do, awesome attractions, great fresh seafood, and delightfully relaxing.

We are both parents and grandparents. Dorothy’s family is in Oklahoma, and my children are in Michigan. Traveling gives us the chance to visit family, see new places, and appreciate the time we have together.

Hero is our head of security and an Australian Shepherd with more energy than he knows what to do with. He loves a Frisbee, catching a ball, climbing up fallen trees, and enjoys the air conditioning on hot days. Hero is just part of our happy family.

Family is a big part of why we travel. We enjoy visiting our children and grandchildren, meeting people along the road, and appreciating the everyday moments that are easy to overlook when life gets busy.
